Wow!  I don’t think I’ve ever before started a review with that word, but here we are, and unapologetically so.  I don’t know if I enjoyed watching In the Heights so much because my expectations of the film were not high, or because it is simply quite good.  Regardless, this upbeat, epic musical is just what the cinematic doctor ordered for movie audiences, and if there’s a film that should get folks back into movie theaters it is this one.

Bay Area-raised director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brings us a wonderful big screen version of the pre-Hamilton Tony-award winning stage musical from the creative genius Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is also a co-producer of and performer in this film.

Each of the stellar cast members are on point, from Anthony Ramos as Usnavi to newcomer Melissa Barrera as Vanessa.  Veteran performers, such as Jimmy Smits, join strong supporting players that are filled with fresh faces. A bonus is that each artist is a skilled singer, an important component to any musical.

The musical numbers and choreography are exemplary, with special kudos to choreographer Christopher Scott.

It is trite to call any film the feel-good movie of the year, but In the Heights will raise your spirits as the story is full of hope, joy, and optimism.  Indeed, it is the very film experience we collectively need here and now.
