MOVIE REVIEW

“Stargirl”
RELEASE DATE: March 13, 2020 (streaming)
MPAA RATING: PG (for mild thematic elements)

As movie theatres remain closed during this time of social distancing and the COVID-19 crisis, many audiences are turning to streaming services for film options to enjoy while staying at home.

One new film available on Disney+ is titled Stargirl, which marks the feature film debut of Grace Vanderwaal, a talented musician who was the season 11 winner on the television competition series America’s Got Talent. It is clear that Vanderwaal’s gifts also include acting ability, as she portrays Susan Carraway, also known as Stargirl; an unconventional teen growing-up in a small town in Arizona.

The film, based on Jerry Spinelli’s book that was a bestseller in 2000, is directed with great care by Julia Hart from the screenplay written by Jordan Horowitz and Kristin Hahn.

There is also great chemistry between Vanderwaal and co-star Graham Verchere, who portrays Leo Borlock.

Although the target audience for Stargirl is the teen viewer, it is an enjoyable entertainment offering for the young at heart, as well.
