“Christopher Robin”

With so many folks seemingly becoming more self-absorbed and work-obsessed, the timing seems right for the release of Disney’s “Christopher Robin.”

Generations have grown-up enjoying the A.A. Milne stories, and subsequent related films, which chronicle the adventures of such beloved characters as Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga, and Roo. In this very sweet live action adventure, we see Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) become a young man, leave behind the Hundred Acre Wood (and the loveable stuffed animals that had become his friends), and become so entrenched in his work in London that he has lost the spirit of playfulness that would allow him to be a better husband to wife Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) and father to daughter Madeline (Bronte Carmichael).

Director Marc Forster brings us a film with great appeal, and while one may find fault in some of its pacing, the story by Alex Ross Perry feels right as it pays homage to such iconic characters. There are wonderful voice talents cast, as well, including longtime Disney contributor Jim Cummings, who lends his talents to both Pooh and Tigger here; and Brad Garrett as Eeyore.

“Christopher Robin” had me in tears within its first ten minutes, and many times again throughout. The film’s style, emotional connection to nostalgia, and sense of goodness are refreshing and welcomed, and should be embraced as warmly as the hug of a child’s stuffed animal.
