BA-ALADDIN

“Aladdin”
RELEASE DATE: May 24, 2019
MPAA RATING: PG (for some action/peril)

I had my doubts about this live-action reboot of the 1992 Disney animated feature, and I certainly lacked confidence in the casting of Will Smith as Genie. Thankfully, I am pleased to inform you that I was incorrect in both suppositions.

Director Guy Ritchie, working from a screenplay he co-wrote with John August, brings us a captivating spectacle that celebrates the best of the original Aladdin, and a cast that is likeable in their respective roles. As for Smith’s take on the character made so memorable by the late Robin Williams who voiced the animated Genie, Smith makes the role his own while reflecting the spirit of the original. Tough slippers to fill, no doubt, but mission accomplished here.

Naomi Scott (Jasmine) and Mena Massoud (Aladdin) hit all the right notes both in acting and in song as they breathe new life into these characters. The only weak link in the cast may be that of Marwan Kenzari (Jafar) who simply does not come off evil enough as the villain who seeks ultimate power.

Another highlight of the film is a new song titled “Speechless” performed by Princess Jasmine, an ode to empowerment that certainly seems appropriate for 2019 audiences. The song dovetails nicely with those of the original film written by eight-time Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and Oscar-winning lyricists Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman.
